Prospective students

The primary focus in studying mathematics is understanding patterns and structure and developing the tools with which to analyse them. Students can then analyse the processes involved in almost any scientific topic, from biological phenomena to computing and from solar theory to fluid dynamics, as well as explore the structure of mathematics itself.

Statistics focuses on collecting, analysing and presenting large quantities of numerical data, with applications in a wide variety of fields.

All undergraduate students studying for a degree in mathematics or statistics will have the opportunity to study pure mathematics, applied mathematics and statistics. Postgraduate students will be more focused on their specialism.

Teaching in Mathematics and Statistics covers all the key aspects of this fundamental science, from the underlying principles and core techniques to a wide range of applications.

The School's modules at sub-honours level are supported by small group tutorials, while the higher level, specialist modules are conducted in small to medium sized classes. By the end of their degree, students will know their lecturers, and the lecturers will know them.
